June Session: Cavaye Implore gods To Rescue MPs As Shocking Deaths National Assembly

The Speaker of the National Assembly has called on the gods of the land to come to the rescue of Cameroon’s Members of Parliament (MPs) following shocking deaths that recently hit the lawmaking institution.
Rt Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril was speaking while opening the June ordinary session of the Lower House of Assembly Tuesday 8 June 2021 at the Yaounde Conference Centre.

“The National Assembly has since the start of the 10th Legislative period, a year ago, had the worst death toll in just one year. It has lost 7 of its members. This unprecedented spade of deaths now warrants me to implore the gods to come to our rescue and to protect us,” Cavaye said.

Hon. Emilia Monjowa Lifaka, MP for Fako West who was one of the Vice Presidents of the house recently died as well as Hon Mbeleg Ngo Yeina of the Sanaga Maritime constituency. This is after the death of other MPs including honourables Harouna Abdoulaye of Mayo Louti, Saraou Bernadette of Mayo Kani North, Yakouba Kaou of Mayo Tsanaga South and Prince Mikody of Boumba et Ndoko.

Cavaye said the session was beginning against the backdrop of the security crisis in the North West, South West and Far North regions as well as the Coronavirus pandemic that continues to persist, affecting the socio-economic life of the nation negatively. He hailed government’s response to the pandemic, condemned non-respect of barrier measures and urged all and sundry to continue adhering to the health measures.

The House Speaker called on Cameroonians to exercise patients, refrain from conventional media and social media arguments judging others before hand to expose them to mob justice while the results of the investigations ordered by the Head of State is still to be made known.

Cavaye on behalf of the house drew government’s attention to the circulation of all sorts of light arms within the two Anglophone regions as a result of the ongoing armed conflict, adding, that the estimated number of illicitly acquired arms has reached 7000 in the country.  He said these arms further worsens the security situation in order not to continue risking the lives of Cameroonians.

He reiterated the commitment of the lawmakers in defending the country against external forces that are bent on soiling the reputation of Cameroon. He said detractors and critics who carry out a smear campaign of misinformation will henceforth have MPs to contend with.

Reactions:
The session will centre on budgetary orientation – Osih Joshua
“The president’s speech said it all. You know that the June session marks around the budgetary orientation debate…the president will want us to no forget that the very important issue of COVID-19 pandemic and the crisis in the North West and South West as well as the Far North is not over and so we have to look at that as well. He has set the pace and it is now on to us to do our job and legislate and to hold government accountable”

The electricity and road situation is pathetic - Hon Injoh Foo Ngang Prodencia
“What I retained is the fact that we have high concern for the security in the regions of the North West, South West and Far North and also we are very concern about the health of our people. The situation of electricity at the level of our constituency is a major issue and again what is very pathetic are our roads. I will not hesitate to ensure that budgetary allocations are made sufficiently to be able to cater for these basic facilities and needs of our constituents”
We should wait for results of Covid funds investigations – Etombi Glagys
“The main issue I picked out from there was that we are waiting for the results of the commission which was set by the president concerning the Covid funds. Instead of listening and taking what the social media is saying, we should get the real facts”
Everybody should be patriotic – Adamu Edwards
“The speaker appreciated the patriotic attitude of the MPs who were able to write back and react vis-Ă -vis what the Americans had about us and called on everybody to be patriotic especially to give the support to the Head of State. I think that was very interesting”
