Far North Region: Atanga-led Delegation Evaluates Works On Pallar Bridge Destroyed By Floods

The MINAT boss also used the visit to evaluate the security situation of the region prior to the 6 December 2020 regional polls and the end-of-year festivities

The Ministers of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji and that of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, have on the high instructions of the Head of State, Paul Biya, visited and evaluated ongoing construction works on the Pallar Bridge in the Far North region.

The bridge was cut off by flood waters in the month of September. Many property and homes were also destroyed in the last flood that forced closed to seven cabinet ministers to visit and evaluate the situation months back. 

The delegation led by Atanga Nji Paul arrived Maroua Saturday 28 November 2020 and were received by Far North Governor, Midjiyawa Bakary. 

Ongoing works on Pallar Bridge cut off by flood Waters in September 

Works on the bridge and a deviation access road had long stopped as a result of heavy rains. The works recently started with the coming of the dry season. 

Minister Nganou after the evaluation said the construction phase has been shortened to 45 days instead of 3 months as was previewed by the technical team that earlier visited the site. 

He said with the commencement of the works, it was but normal for them to evaluate and ensure it is being done according to modern standards and also to reassure the population of the goodwill of government. 

Works on the collapse bridge 

The two ministers called on the contractors to speed up work and provide an alternative bridge in the days ahead to permit the population go about their duties with stress.

Atanga Nji used the opportunity of the visit to evaluate the security situation of the region prior to the regional polls and the celebration of end-of-year festivities. 

The meeting brought together administrative and top security officials of the region. 

The ministers also evaluated the level of execution of development projects in the region and as well as reiterated the need for commercial motorbike riders to remain law-abiding and be identified as they go about their daily activates. 

The MINAT congratulated administrative authorities and forces of law and order as well as the population for their collaboration in keeping the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist sect in check. 


He disclosed that a comprehensive report of what they saw on the field will be compiled and sent to the Prime Minister and Head of State President Paul Biya. 

The visit comes barely weeks after recent floods displaced roughly over 1,500 families following a heavy rainfall. Several homes were destroyed, livestock and plantations washed away. 

The recent flood was around Merem. It left many of the residents displaced and forced many to resettle in nearby localities like Youma, Congeleo, Wideo and Kairoum.
