The Speaker of the National Assembly has condemned the spate “terrorist” attacks on children and women in Far North, South West and North West regions from “so-called” separatist and Boko Haram fighters and called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to personally get involve in the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration process in these three regions.
The Rt Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril was speaking as he chaired the opening session of the November session of the 2020 legislative year, devoted to deliberations and adoption of the 2021 state budget.
“I urge you to tell the youths concerned to leave the bushes and go for the decent jobs in President Biya’s plan for them. Make them know the plan President Biya has for their life,” Cavaye told the MPs, adding, that “the Presidential plan constitutes a de facto amnesty. It is an offer for peace – the Head of State’s sincere and irreversible hand for fellowship”.
The House Speaker in very strong terms condemned the attack on school children in Kumba and urged government to do all it can to bring perpetrators of the act to book.
Aside the mission to combat terrorism, restore security in troubled areas as well a complete major infrastructure development projects in 2021, Cavaye called on government focus on completing the decentralisation process, ensure smooth organisation of the first regional elections, implement the recommendations adopted during the Major National Dialogue, implement the reconstruction and development plan for NW, SW regions, put in place stimulus measures to uphold the special status granted to the Anglophone regions and provide support package to the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration centres.
He called on MPs to examine the finance bill to be tabled before them, ensure it is realistic and tailored to the country’s concerns, action and resilience, take its international commitments into account and above all, make it possible for the President to press on with his agenda in the current seven-year term of office.
Cavaye said despite the economic difficulties confronting the country, 2021 should be considered the decisive step on the country’s path to become an emerging economy.
He said in addition to sustained efforts to roll back the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative for government to initiate universal health coverage in 2021, formulate innovative economic policies for post COVID-19 economic recovery, respect the 7-point road map adopted during the 11th session of the Cameroon Business Forum, increase support to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises sector, create guarantee funds in order to forestall the negative effects of COVID-19 on the SMEs sector, get the SMEs bank out of the doldrums for good and support the organisation of the AFCON and CHAN competitions.
Despite the numerous crises rocking the country, Cavaye said government held on and continued it forward march under the President – an act which he said makes Cameroon to be a model of resilience.
He lauded efforts made by the presidential couple in assisting flood victims in the nationwide, hailed the contribution of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism for efforts made in discouraging hate speech, encouraging bilingualism and living together as well as strides made by government in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The solemn session was attended by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute and other cabinet Ministers as well as members of the judiciary and diplomats accredited to Yaounde.
