After one week strike over unpaid grants: Panicky Gov’t Announces Increase In Lecturers’ Salary, Other Benefits

Government has hastily announced moves to increase the salary of support staff of all state universities as well as increase on the allowances and other benefits of university lecturer nationwide.

The urgent move follows one week strike action carried out by university lecturers under the banner of the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education, SYNES.

The lecturers were decried prolong delays in payments for their research allowances including that for the supervision of students, correction of their final year thesis, extra hours among other benefits owed them by the state. 

They called on the ministries of Higher Education and that of Finance do not make fast moves to answer to their worries else they will extend the week strike to two weeks and take other drastic measures.  

Responding to their worries earlier this week, Higher Education Minister, Fame Ndongo, issued a release announcing plans to increase payments and other benefits as well as handle earlier concerns raised. The minister stated in the release that the moves are geared towards maintaining social peace and serenity in state universities.

He said the increase in the salary of support staff of state universities took effect from January 2021 as instructed by President Paul Biya. 

He said it follows negotiations between the ministries of Higher Education, Finance, Labour and Social Security, State Universities and the National Trade Union of the Support Staff of Universities.

The release also announces the institution of a quarterly financial allocation for the modernization of university research paid to all permanent staff with Professors to receive FCFA 1 060 000 million each, associate professors 860 000, senior lecturers 680 000 and 385 000 for assistant lecturers. 

Fame Ndongo said payments for the last quota of these allowances for 2020 started 22 January 2021 while measures are on course to start payment for the first quota of 2021 after March 31. 

The release also indicated that permanent staff are also entitled to allowances and gratuities link to their academic performance and the number of hours put in teaching while the special allowance for academic excellence for students at FCFA 50 000 will be given to all students in private and state universities.
