Inhabitants of Kumba in Meme Division in the restive South West region have been called upon to be very vigilant in order to assist security and defense forces overcome the new tactics brought about by separatist fighters in the city where improvise explosive devices are planted in many popular joints.
Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Mewanu made the call at the entrance to the Kumba Main Market Wednesday 12 May 2021. He was addressing the population and traders shortly after two explosive devices reportedly planted by separatist at the entrance to the market were discovered. The explosives were discovered by the night watchman of the market.
“Everybody should increase vigilance...they have to take note of every little irregularity that they find around so that they can inform the police, the administration and the people responsible,” Gregory Mewanu said.
Mewanu added that if not for the vigilance of the market security guards, the explosive would have killed at least 25 or even 50 innocent persons if it was detonated. The explosives planted at two different positions were identified and carefully diffused by security elements.
This appears to be the new tactic put in place by separatist fighters. Few months back a young girl of less than 10 years sustained severe injuries went an explosive device was detonated in Fiango. The little child later succumbed to death in a health facility in Buea.
Few weeks back, two inter-urban transport buses plying the Kumba-Buea highway are said to have been touched by an explosive device that was detonated by suspected separatist around the Mile 29 hill. The incident left several passengers injured.
