Mission to Equatorial Guinea: Biya Knights CRTV’s Albert Njie Mbonde For Show Of Professionalism, Bravery

The incredible show of professionalism and bravery of the Chief of the Political Desk at the Central Newsroom of the National Station of the Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) has been recognized by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya.

Albert Njie Mbonde was through a decree signed by the Head of State decorated with a medal and raised to the rank of Knight of the Cameroon Order of Valour. Other recipients included seven journalists from the CRTV and Cameroon Tribune alongside over 80 elements of the defence and security forces.

They were recognized for their respective contribution to the success of the ‘Mission to Bata’ – a humanitarian intervention that Biya dispatched to neighbouring Equatorial Guinea – following massive explosions that hit a munitions base, causing inestimable destruction of property and loss of over a hundred lives.

Njie Mbonde and others were decorated Monday 17 May 2020 on behalf of President Biya by the Minister Delegate to the Presidency in Charge of Defense, MINDEF, Joseph Beti Assomo. The minister told recipients that President Biya was charmed by the quality of feedback he got from the President of Equatorial-Guinea, Theodoro Obiang Nguema Bazogo, to exceptionally honour them. 

“…Impressed  by  the  reports  and  testimonies  from  Malabo  about  the  work  done by  the  emergency  humanitarian  team, president  Biya  decided  to  sign  the  decrees to  exceptionally  honour  members  of  the team  with  medals  of  valour  and  merit,”  Beti Assomo stated. He explained that the presence of journalists among the recipients was not by chance but in recognition of their professionalism and bravery in covering the tragic events in Bata.

Beti Assomo on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces congratulated the recipients, noting, that they have entered the reduced circle of privileged Cameroonians who have been honoured with medals by the President. He enjoined them not to lay on their laurels but to continue with hard work in their respective fields. 

Talking to reporters after receiving the medal, Njie Mbonde thanked the Head of State for the mark of high recognition and acknowledgement which he said conveys a clear message from the President that the efforts of journalists towards peace building in the country and beyond is appreciated.

“It is an acknowledgement and recognition of journalists as active participants in the promotion of peace not only within the national territory but also in the CEMAC Sub-region and beyond. It is a strong message from the President, and it has not fallen on deaf ears. It is a message sent and a message well understood.  We  thank  the  head  of state  for  this  mark  of  high recognition and  acknowledgement,” said the multi-talented journalist.

The multi award-winning quadragenarian with slightly over two decades experience at the state broadcaster is a household name within the media landscape in Cameroon. Njie Mbonde was chosen by management to be among the pioneer anchors of the 5-6pm radio newscast – arguably the most listened radio news nationwide – upon inception.

His unrivaled creativity and style of presentation added to his perfect bilingualism gets millions of Cameroonians spellbound and hooked to their radio sets when it is news time. Njie Mbonde’s fame went a notch higher with the introduction of his famous attention-grabbing tactic, “the headlineeessss” during prime time newscast. Such show of creativity and competence in a competitive broadcast landscape didn’t go unnoticed as CRTV management recently recognized him as Best Radio News Anchor. 
Njie Mbonde’s sterling journalism talent, professionalism, flair, diction, articulation, eloquence, dynamism, respect of professional codes of ethics and deontology got him the award of Best Radio Journalist for the year 2020 from the Association of Communicators of Cameroon, ASCOM. The native of Bokwoango, a village in Buea, regional capital of Cameroon’s crisis-hit South West is considered by colleagues as one of Cameroon’s most dynamic and creative of his generation. 

For ten years, Njie perfectly hosted one of CRTV’s most watched breakfast show, ‘Hello’. Njie through his outfits as TV host sold the rich culture of Cameroon’s fashion industry and others aspects of our culture to the globe. 

The well-travelled journalist is also an ace sportscaster, commentator, sports editor and animator. He served as team press officer for Cameroon's intermediate lions squads (under 17, 20, 23 intermediate lions) for eleven years. He has also served as anchorman of one of the most powerful news magazine programme on the CRTV, ‘Cameroon This Morning’.

The winner of the Victoria International Media Merit Award-VIIMMA 2020 Best All-Round Journalist award has also featured in slots of other well-known CRTV programs like ‘Morning Safari’ and ‘Day Break’.

Appointed as Political Desk Editor at CRTV radio in 2018, Njie has lived up to the expectations of many. The quality of his reports, commentaries, editorials has silence many critics who had written him off upon appointment from the sports desk as a neophyte in political reporting.
