Operation physical head count: Gov’t Recovers FCFA 30 Billion From Salaries Of Absentee Civil Servants

A whooping sum of FCFA 30 billion would be recovered following a move initiated by government to cleanse the public service of civil servants who might have died, abandoned their duty posts but unduly receiving salary.
The revelation was made public Wednesday 26 May 2021 by Public Service and Administrative Reforms minister, Joseph Anderson LE. He was speaking during a press conference he organized to explain steps taken in the direction of cleansing the public service payroll as well as the circumstances that led to the dismissal of some 493 workers with the files of many others under scrutiny.

LE disclosed that of the 8,765 absentee civil servants who were issued queries since 2019 for irregular absences and requested to appear before the public service disciplinary board to explain their situation, majority did not show up while others did but failed to provide satisfactory answers to their crimes.

He revealed that the 493 state workers dismissed fall within the batch of the first set of 7,622 personnel whose files have been examined. He said the exercise found out that 315 of those summoned had died but were still on the state payroll with family relations receiving their salaries.
He said with the dismissal, government has begun recovering money which at date stands at FCFA 30 billion.

He insisted absentee state personnel and their families who continue to receive salary from state coffers for no work done will have to pay for it. The move is in line with the operation of physical head count of state personnel on the instructions of the president of the republic, implemented under the authority of the Prime Minister and relates to the fight against public absenteeism among public workers.

The minister had in March this year disclosed that the files of over 10 000 civil servants were being scrutinized for questions they would have to answer in relation to various crimes committed within the public service. Worth noting is the fact that most aspects of the public service have been digitalized as well as decentralized, there are limiting the number of times employees used to abandon their duty post to chase files in the central service in Yaounde.
