Five gangsters and two of their accomplices have been arrested by elements of the national Gendarmerie following a burglary in a fuel station in Soa, a locality on the outskirts of Yaounde in the Centre region.
The suspects were systematically arrested following investigations launched by the gendarmes after a filling station was robbed in the area. The bandits made away with the sum of FCFA 19.4 million in an act said to have been masterminded by one of the workers of the filling station 31 March 2021.
It was discovered Jean Pierre Ndongo, a worker with the Soa-based Neptune filling station conspired with the five gangsters who arrived the station at 9am, on that faithful day, when the money made from sales for an entire week was being counted.
The bandits are said to have knocked at the door which was opened by Jean Pierre and another colleague. They would later be surrendered by the bandits with knives, before carting away the huge sum.
The operation leading to the arrest was successful thanks to support from the National Gendarmerie Legion commander for the Centre region, who, through the investigating officer, Lieutenant Alo Mbah Maxim, came in to reinforce the Soa brigade staff.
Tipoffs from the some locals helped the investigations that led to the arrest of two of the bandits. The arrested bandits then disclosed the names of other members of the operation including Jean Pierre Ndongo.
They were picked up in possession of a vehicle, three grinding mills, 15kgs of marijuana, other consignment of hard drugs, syringes. The five gangsters plus their two accomplices will in the days ahead face trial.
