Another promise? Gov’t Promises To Begin Issuance Of Biometric Passports July 1

A new biometric passport production is set to go underway in the country beginning 1 July 2021. The announcement was made Tuesday 8 June 2021 at the General Delegation of National Security, DGSN.
The objective of the new systems aims at issuing passports in the country and its diplomatic services abroad within 48 hours. The new passport is said to cost FCFA 110 000, an increase of FCFA 35 000 from the former price.

Providing clarifications to reporters during a press conference, the Secretary General at the DGSN, Baya Dominic, said the move to modernise the passports is in keeping with presidential prescriptions to ease the issuance of the travel document.

He elaborated that once an applicant fulfils the requirement for the document, it is going to be made available to them within 48 hours. He said the new move will end corruption and bottlenecks in the process.

He said an agreement to last ten years has been reached with a production consortium that is capable of producing 1500-2500 passports per day. He said applicants have the possibility of enrolling online at any immigration police station of embassies abroad.

He said the total of FCFA 110 000 including total charges for physical stamp will be paid either through mobile telephone service providers and receipted for. He said applicants may barely present themselves only for a snapshot, signature and to present original copies of all their other documents.

He said in case of rejection, applications will be notified online via mail for them to readjust their documents. The consortium charged with the production of the biometric passport is upbeat that security measures have been taken to forestall fraud.

The declaration from the DGSN has been considered by Cameroonians as another promised which risk not been fulfilled. There has been recent outcry across social media platforms with Cameroonians decrying prolong delay is obtaining originals of the ID cards and passports.

The Police boss through the SG recently assured that new move will be the most secured and modern in the world. He reminded Cameroonians that the law only recognises the first identification information contained in the data base.

Baya disclosed that more than three million Cameroonians today fine themselves in the situation of multiple identities because they personally change elements of their civil status data.
