The government of the United States of America, USA, has taken a decision to impose visa restrictions on those ordering and abetting the violence and hate in the restive North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
The move was announced by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, Monday 7 June 2021. Political bookmakers are unanimous that the decision will be followed in very near future by mass arrest, detention and even deportation of separatist ringleaders to Cameroon.
The decision from Joe Biden-led administration has given fresh hopes in the horizon that the US is now ready to bring to account, all those hiding on American soil and other parts of the globe, who are believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the peaceful resolution of the crisis in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon.
The announced Visa restriction has left many diaspora-based separatist kingpins in panic and regret of their actions back home. Cameroonians from across the board have applauded the decision from the US government. Many are those praying the US to go further in their move to contribute to restoring peace in NW, SW by arresting and deporting separatist sponsors and leaders orchestrating mayhem back home.
US-based separatist leaders and other foreign countries have for over four years imposed school boycott on all inhabitants of the two regions against the wish of the population as a means to achieve their independence agenda. Pupils, students, teachers and school administrators as well as civilians are permanently kidnapped, tortured, murdered and at times released after payment of huge ransoms while classrooms are burned. Local municipal and administrative authorities are not left out as even state workers have been targets.
“We condemn those who undermine peace through engaging in or inciting violence, human rights violations and abuses, and threats against advocates for peace or humanitarian workers. I am establishing a policy imposing visa restrictions on individuals who are believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the peaceful resolution of the crisis in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon,” partly read the statement from the US government.
The US government said the decision reflects their “commitment to advance a dialogue to peacefully resolve the Anglophone crisis and support respect for human rights”. The Biden-led administration said it “strongly supports the Cameroonian people, and we remain committed to working together to advance democracy and mutual prosperity for both our countries”.
“The United States is deeply concerned by the continued violence in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. We continue to call for both the Cameroonian government and separatist armed groups to end the violence and engage in a dialogue without preconditions to peacefully resolve the crisis. It is important that children can attend school and that humanitarian aid can be delivered. We urge all relevant stakeholders in Cameroon and in the diaspora to engage constructively and seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis,” added statement from the US government.
The move from the US falls in line with incessant appeals made by the Cameroonian leader, Paul Biya, to friendly countries hosting those ordering destruction back home. With announced Visa restriction, sources are already hinting that mass arrest and deportation of separatist leaders would be the next move from the US government.
