Officials of Yaounde city council earlier this week launched demolition exercise on some road side businesses. The demolition exercise took place along Emia and Melen neighbourhoods. It started during the late hours of Wednesday 2 December breaking Thursday.
The makeshift businesses demolished with used of caterpillars included restaurants, bars, mobile money kiosks, and stores among many others. The action falls in line with earlier warnings dished out the pioneer City Mayor, Luc Messi Atangana upon assuming office in March.
Luc Messi had promise to bring order on major streets and curb urban disorder in the country’s political capital especially as the country looks forward to host the African Nations Football Championship, CHAN in 2021 and subsequently the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in 2022.
In March, he issued a two day warning to roadside vendors to liberate both sides of the pavement by ten metres or face the law. This was as he toured some major neighbourhoods to sensitise the population on the necessity to keep the town clean.
He equally urged all vendors to ensure waste is properly dispose of around all road sides where their businesses are carried out. Such measures have been tried by the administration in the past but it wasn’t too effective.
The demolition exercise seems not to scare many of the traders. Many of them have erected new makeshift joints in the same positions. Traders have complain of lack of stalls in the markets where they can displace their products and prefer selling at roadsides.
