Dschang-Santchou road accident: Biya Mourns Victims, Orders Investigations As Minister Suspends Travel Agency

President Paul Biya has instructed administrative authorities to ensure proper health care is given to survivors of the Dschang-Santchou highway road accident that claimed the lives of 53 Cameroonians and left 29 injured.
 The instruction is contained in an official telegram the President sent to the Governor of the West region, Awa Fonka Augustine, 27 January 2021. He further took to his twitter page to express his condolences to the bereaved families. 

“It is with great sadness that I heard of the tragic loss of life following a ghastly accident at a cliff in Dschang. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured,” Biya tweeted.

The incident involved a 70-seater bus belonging to Menoua voyage and a mini truck that was transporting illicit fuel. Transport Minister, Jean Ernest Massena Ngale Bibehe in a release said the accident occurred at about 3:30am. The bus is said to have left Douala heading to the West while the truck was from Bafoussam. 

Governor Awa during a fact-finding missions said the deceased were burnt beyond recognition as a result of fire following the head-on collision. The truck is said to have had a break failure which reportedly resulted to the accident.
 
Reports from state media, CRTV indicates that the survivors are positively responding to treatment in the Bafoussam Regional Hospital for severe cases and others in Dschang. Authorities are busy struggling to identify the corpses and hand them over to families for burial. Less than ten of the corpse have so far been identified. 

Activities of the transport agency have been suspended till further notice while investigations have been opened to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
