Members of Parliament from the North West region have once more express dismay at the abandonment of construction works at the site of the Bamenda referral hospital in Nkwen, bamenda III Subdivision.
Works at site to host Bamenda referral hospital abandoned
The remarks were made after a visit to the project site by a parliamentary commission of inquiry. This comes barely two months after all MPs from the region confronted the Minister of Public Health on delays in the execution of projects under his ministry in the region. The Honourable Emmanuel Banmi led team revealed that works at the site were abandoned since 2018. They revealed that only abandoned construction equipment, erected walls engulfed by overgrown grass was visible at the site.
In an exchange with the MPs, the subcontracting officer of the project, Michael Mubang, blamed the abandonment of the works on insecurity caused by the armed conflict in the region.
Hon. Banmi said of the fourteen structures to be constructed by the company only seven have been raised to roofing levels while the others are still at the level of the foundation. Banmi urged those concern to resume works on the site.
The foundation stone of the abandoned project which is supposed to be worth FCFA 15 billion upon completion was laid since May 2017 by former Public Health Minister, Andre Mama Fouda. The structures at supposed to cost FCFA 10 billion with equipment to cost 5 billion.
The objective was to improve health care delivery to the inhabitants of the region, limit movements within and without the county in search of health care as well as serve as training ground for the university of Bamenda medical students.
NW lawmakers in the month of December told Minister Manaouda Malachie that the population yearns to see the resumption of construction works at the site of the Referral Hospital as well as the supply of kits and technical expertise to the Bamenda Regional Hospital Hemodialysis Centre, transformation of health structures across the region, post efficient and qualified health care providers, provide certain areas with ambulances and befitting vehicles that can ply the difficult terrain and reinforce supply of medical equipment to hospitals and health structures among others.
