Officials of the Cameroon Airlines Corporation, Camair-Co have issued a release indicating that one of their aircraft experience “runway excursion” at the Yaounde international airport after landing.
“Embraer ERJ-145, flight 206 from Douala, experienced a runway excursion following very bad weather conditions on Friday 21 May 2021,” partly read the release issued by the Director General which added that there was no loss of lives or destruction.
“All passengers were disembarked normally. Camair-co acknowledges the professionalism and dexterity of the entire crew who were able to control the aircraft in these very bad weather conditions,” the release added. Management reassured public and its loyal customers of the normal continuation of its flight operations without disruption of its operating program.
There are six regional headquarters connected to the corporation’s routes. The airport in Bafut in the North West region is still to be included in their schedule due to the current conflict rocking the region.
Sometime in 2020, an aircraft of the company was caught by bullets fired from nearby bushes at the airport. Authorities blamed the attack on separatist fighters. Buea, Bertoua and Ebolowa are also still to be part of the national carrier’s itinerary.
It fully resumed activities early 2021 after its activities were grounded for months due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that restricted travelling as well as financial hardship that hit the company. The health crisis caused many workers of the national carrier to be technically layoff. The company has decided to focus of domestic flights so as to progressively resume international travels.
President Paul Biya recently ordered the restructuring of the company with 51% of capital opened to strategic partners as well as recommended that some cash be pumped into the corporation for revival and that two of the ailing planes of the company should be taken for repairs.
Since its creation in September 2006 to replace the defunct Cameroon Airlines (Camair), Camair-Co has been operated as a public service company with little or no profit making objectives. The airline that prides itself as ‘The Star of Cameroon’ has been flying through a turbulent zone; grappling with financial and managerial crisis.
