Food insecurity pressure: Gov’t To Assist Over 2.7 IDPs, Others In 14 Conflict-hit Divisions

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister has disclosed plans by government to assist some 2.7 internally displaced persons and others living in some 14 conflict-hit Divisions, facing food insecurity pressure. 
Gabriel Mbairobe disclosure the plan in Yaounde Thursday 15 April 2021. It was during a press outing on government’s declaration on food security situation in the country and populations in high-risk zones.

He said government is committed to providing assistance to these group of persons facing food insecurity in 14 Divisions in the crisis-hit Far North, North West and South West regions as well as internally displaced populations in the Littoral, West and Centre regions.

Mbairobe said government is putting together supplementary food stocks to assist them besides creating a food and nutrition crisis prevention and management system in the country. He used the occasion to despair rumours of looming nationwide food shortage, adding that food security situation in the country is globally satisfactory. 

This, the minister said is thanks to the abundance of agro-pastoral productions of plantains, yams, beans, cassava, irish potatoes in the West, South, East, Centre and Littoral regions as well as maize, millet, cattle, in the Adamawa, North and Far regions and tomatoes, cassava, groundnuts, banana, in the South West and North West regions which all jointly paint a globally satisfactory situation of food security nationwide. 

The MINADER boss said innovative agricultural practices, reinforcing adaptation to climate change, settlement of young farmers, development of agric food industries and more support for research could be possible solutions that must be adopted to better guarantee food security in the country. 

He saluted technical partners like the Food and Agriculture Organisation significant support offered to farmers in recent years to boost agri-pastoral productions in the country.
