Clandestine urban transporters and taxi drivers with very old and dirty cars operating in the nation’s political capital, Yaounde are now on a hot seat with officials of the Yaounde City Council.
This follows an operation launched by the Urban Order Department of the council. It aims at getting the streets of Yaounde rid of such dirty cabs and clandestine vehicles.
As explained by the Director of the Urban Order Department, Senior Superintendent of Police Fabien Didier Ateba Mbarga, taxis that are not road worthy will be impounded and their owners sanctioned.
“The main goal of this operation is to ameliorate the physical aspect of those cars involved in public transportation. It is a civic activity and we are invited all the drivers to be conscious that it is a necessary move to change the aspect of their cars,” explained Ateba Mbarga.
He said there exist several nonconformist car owners posing for taxis drivers whose vehicles are not in the regular yellow colour. The campaign involves checking the technical state of vehicles, their legality to ply the city of Yaounde as well as their physical outlook. Trade union leaders have hailed the move, stating it will help reduce the phenomenon of clandestine vehicles.
It comes after the council months back launched an operation to demolish makeshift businesses including restaurants, bars, mobile money kiosks, and stores among many others. Yaounde’s pioneer City Mayor, Luc Messi Atangana upon assuming office in March promised to bring order on major streets and curb urban disorder as the country looks forward to host the just ended African Nations Football Championship, CHAN and the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in 2022.
