Protecting cultural inheritance: Cameroon Pledges Endless Support For Preservation Of Cameroonian Museums

Government has made a pledge to stop at nothing in supporting the preservation of Cameroonian museums. The promised was made in Yaounde by Arts and Culture Minister, Bidoung Mkpatt.
He was speaking at the National Museum as Cameroon joined the globe 18 May 2021 to celebrate the 44th edition of the International Museum Day under the theme ‘The future of the Museums: Recover and Reimagine’. He said support is a catalyst in the development of the cultural heritage.

"The 2021 edition is being celebrated in a particular context marked by a global health crisis linked to the COVID-19 pandemic which has enormous repercussions in the cultural sector in general and on museum leisure activities in particular…,” Bidoung Mkpatt stated, noting, that the role of museums evolve and reinvents itself constantly so as to be more interactive and benefit the community as demonstrated president Biya’s book titled ‘Communal Liberalism’.

“Cultural universals are values that must be identified, preserved, promoted for the interest of the nation…the determination and preservation of these cultural universals are supported by the double notions of the identity and national unity of our people for culture is glued to unity…,” he said while reassuring government’s continues support in the sector.

“…government will not fail in its role of being supporter for the development of its museums. For years, government has done so through subventions for the construction, rehabilitation and equipping of several museums across the national territory; namely: the Yaounde National Museum, the Elembe Museum in Nkol-Afamba in the Centre region, the Royal Museumin Mokolo in the Far North region, the Royal Museum in Oku in the North West region, the Royal Museum in Batoufam in the West region,” he recounted.

The minister challenged stakeholders and actors in the sector to federate forces and contribute to the growth and preservation of the country’s cultural heritage. The celebration was also marked by a tour at the Nomekam de Ngoya II Museum in the Okola Sub-division, Lekie Division of the Centre region.
