Government has strongly condemned the phenomenon of sexual harassment on young and adolescent girls which are later posted on social media platforms and called for a united and merciless war to be launched to denounce all perpetrators.
Addressing the issue during a press conference Wednesday 23 June 2021, the minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF), Marie Therese Abena Ondoa, strongly condemned the recent abuse of an 18-year-old girl identified as Malicka Bayemi whose sex tape has made rounds on social media and promise total government support to the victim in other to bring the perpetrator to book. The lady is said to have reportedly been abuse by two different men in the office of renowned sports journalist, Martin Camus Mimb.
“I wish to seize this opportunity to strongly denounce these heinous and unethical acts which are turning young women into an object, transforming her into a sex toy, void of any value. In such harsh circumstances, the victims as well as their families can count on both the government support and that of all Cameroonian women and families,” Abena Ondoa promised.
She urged stakeholders in the fight against abuses notably; government, legal, political, traditional and religious authorities and civil society to engage in a merciless battle against perpetrators, adding that government will stop at nothing in protecting children, women, young girls, families, communities and vulnerable people in accordance with the strategic frame work and vision of Cameroon.
“Refusing to denounce such acts is accepting to be an accomplice and compromising the future for our children. We all have the duty to whatever level to break the silence and to combat these acts which are nothing but barbaric,” she stated, while reminding perpetrators of the mental and psychological distress they put victims, their families, and the entire country into.
She equally urged young girls and youth to refrain from easy gains, irresponsible use of social media, alcohol, drug and consumption of other psychotropic substances and to desist keeping bad friends.
“I urge family heads, parents, community to exercise more vigilance in raising their children, instilling moral and ethical values in them as well as spirit of hard work. Particular activates should be given to children by involving them in healthy leisure activities during holidays and avoiding activities that expose them to the ills we are condemning,” adding that families should ensure that the education of their kids takes into account the preservation and strengthening of positive moral, traditional and cultural values.
