The ministry of defense has issued a release in which it states that Djibril Dubila, murdered in his car by security elements Sunday 4 July 2021 was a local relay agent to certain secessionist terrorist gangs in the restive region.
The incident occurred at the Blow Foncha neighbourhood in Bamenda III Subdivision. Angered by the brutal killing, the population of the area went amok, carrying the corpse and parading the streets while condemning the actions of the security elements.
But in a release issued Tuesday 6 July, Col. Cyrille Serge Atonfack, Army Spokesman said Djibril was caught by a dissuasive shot fired by the elements as he attempted to escape from security officers at the control post at the neighbourhood.
Atonfack said he got panicked when arrived the control post and engaged a manoeuver to escape when he ought to stop and was forcefully stopped by deterrent gunshots which unfortunately hit him fatally.
The release indicates the decease who hails from Jakari subdivision had been involved in several kidnappings with ransom demands as well as numerous cases of conditional threats.
“Under multiple pseudonyms and accounts on social networks, he is said to have personally and directly led several groups of scammers specialized in online scamming,” the release read in parts.
Preliminary findings according to the release established with certainty that an arrest warrant had been issued against him on the 24 November 2020 by the President of the Bamenda Military Tribunal following Judgment N°118/2/2020 of 4th November 2020 sentencing him to three years imprisonment and FCFA 565,950 fine and accumulated damages for inciting cessation and issuing conditional threats.
Bamenda residents who took to the streets to denounce the killing hold a contrary view to that put forward by MINDEF. They say the deceased was a businessman who never wronged anybody. The police checkpoint where he was murdered was burnt down by the irate youth. Djibril was buried Monday morning at the Municipal cemetery in Bamenda II.
