National Assembly: MPs Urged To Be Anti-Covid-19 Vaccine, AFCON 2021 Ambassadors

Members of the Parliament, MPs, have been urged to be ambassadors of the anti-Covid-19 vaccination and the forthcoming Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations billed for Cameroon from January 2022 once they return to their individual constituencies.
The call was made Wednesday 7 July 2021 by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril while closing the second Ordinary Session of the house for the 2021 legislative year.

“As you return to your respective constituencies, be canvassers of anti-Covid-19 vaccination and AFCON in 2022 in Cameroon,” Cavaye said while efforts to eradicate the health crisis and ensure a hitch-free and perfect hosting of the upcoming football competition as two major challenges facing the country.

He said though government measures in tackling the health crisis has so far produced satisfactory results, “the vaccination campaign is still to commence in earnest at a time when official sources indicate that there are enough vaccines in stock”.

“…some compatriots continue to be lukewarm and averse to vaccination against Covid-19. Worse still, some compatriots continue to lend credence to the elaborate anti-vaccination propaganda in the social media,” Cavaye said while reiterating the health advantages of the vaccine to Cameroonians and urging government not to relent in their move to fight the virus.
“Government needs to embark on more robust, elaborate and more effective awareness-raising campaign to counteract messages in the social media. It should not rule out proximity communication by carrying out a door-to-door sensitisation campaign,” Cavaye stated while urging all and sundry to continue to adhere to barrier measures.

The House Speaker called on all to give their unreserved support to government for a successful hosting of the upcoming continental football jamboree which he said will to say the least boost the ego of everyone. He challenged all stakeholders to play their role in helping government realizing the task and exhorted contractors to go an extra mile to deliver and on time.

“The challenge is quite huge considering that the competition could take place amid a health crisis. We must, however, remain confident…it is therefore incumbent on all and sundry to make concerted efforts and assist the government,” he pleaded. He called on officials to “shun internal squabbles plaguing sports in general and football in particular, end misinformation, fake news and propaganda on social media, unite, support the national team”.

The June session ends with seven bills scrutinised and adopted while four special plenary sittings were organized on issues of increasing and glaring lapses in the functioning of some public and private corporations notably those charge with supply of water, electricity. The session also touched on the quasi-endemic malaise of the arts and culture sector, the universal health coverage scheme as well as the budget orientation debate which enabled MPs and the ministry of finance to exchange views and make proposals for the preparation of the next budget.

The session ended with the award of May 20 medals to seven MPs including honourables Manamourou Isabelle Epse Silikam, Dooh Collins, Nanga Mefant Berthe, Joshua Nambangui Osih, Aliyoum Fadil, Ndzie Franck Eric and Salmana Amadou Ali.
