Fighting new COVID-19 cases in school campuses: Gov’t Bans Access To Students Without Mask, Orders Widespread Testing

By Doh Bertrand Nua

In an attempt to contain the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hitting schools across some regions of the country, Secondary Education Minister has banned access to school campuses to students who do not wear facemask.

Secondary Education Minister, Prof. Nalova Lyonga

The decision of Prof. Pauline Egbe Nalova Lyonga is contained in a release she issued with reference 12.3/20/MINESEC of 16 November 2020, a copy of which Cameroon Express Info procured.

Nolava Lyonga in the communique reminds the education community including parents that a high degree of neglect has been observed towards the respect of the barrier measures aimed at stopping the propagation of the pandemic.

“Consequently, widespread testing has been recommended and access to the school premises is restricted to students putting on their face masks,” partly read the document.

The Minister further ordered that spot checks be carried out to ensure that students are effectively wearing their masks both inside the school and in class as well as respect of the other basic measures including regular hand washing with soap, and reinforcement of social distancing.

The decision comes barely a week after at least twenty students and a teacher from three schools in Douala in the Littoral region tested positive for the virus.

Similar outbreak of new cases were recorded in the West region with the governor issuing a communique calling for strict respect of barrier measures.
