Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji has urged the ten regional governors to put intensified vigilance and intelligence at the centre of our priorities nationwide prior to the organisation of the forthcoming regional elections and end-of-year festivities.
He handed the security directives of the Head of State, Paul Biya, during the second bi-annual conference of regional governors for the year 2020.
The two conference which held at the Yaounde city council Monday 16 to Tuesday 17 November 2020 focused on providing adequate and practical answers to security concerns that would guarantee a hitch free poll and end-of-year celebrations.
Atanga Nji disclosed that the measures will only add to those already taken by government prior to the start and holding of classes nationwide as well as the strengthening the security system and territorial networking, safeguarding of schools specifically in the North West, South West and Far North regions.
“The prescribed measures must certainly be closely monitored, especially: execution of major development projects in order to translate the Head of State’s vision of "great opportunities" into concrete reality; safety of our roads; tight security in urban centres, villages and border areas; monitoring of the activities of political parties and NGOs; relentless fight against the activities of terrorist groups and education for them to lay down their weapons and integrate the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Centres (DDRCs); effective involvement of Administrative Authorities in the establishment of regions in their Regional and Local Authority component; providing security to Elections Cameroon before, during and after the regional elections of 6 December 2020,” Atanga Nji instructed.
He urged the governors to accompany the elections management body, ELECAM in the process by ensuring the protection of all election stakeholders and election material nationwide before, during and after the polls.
He stressed on the need for the governors to step up control measures against the fight to contain the Coronavirus.
“Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic must remain a national concern, and it is time to remain vigilant for COVID-19 has not been eradicated,” he said.
The conference featured presentation from the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development, George Elanga Obam, who, stressed on the role of governors in the implementation of regional councils.
The Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defense in Charge of the National Gendarmerie, Galax Etouga Yves Landry and the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguelle, also presented a joint report on the security measures ahead of the regional polls.
Paul Atanga Nji lauded the multifaceted sacrifices made by the defence and security forces to eradicate all the ills rocking the country, especially the persistent terrorist acts that are disturbing peace of the population in some regions and reassured both the national and international committee that the security situation of the country based on reports from the governors was perfectly under control.
Award of Medals to Deserving MINAT Staff
Minister Paul Atanga Nji on behalf of President Paul Biya decorated six deserving personnel of the ministry for their outstanding services rendered to the nation.
The recognition was meant to be handed to the personnel on 20 May 2020 during the National Day celebration which was unfortunately cancelled as a result of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among the decorated personnel were the two Anglophone Governors serving in the Centre and West regions.
Governors Naseri Paul Bea and Awa Fonka Augustine respectively were raised by to the rank of Grand Officer of the Dignity of the National Order of Valour.
The governor of the South region, Nguele Nguele Felix, the Secretary General of MINAT, Essomba Pierre and Ndzana Loius De Gonzague Anaclet, were raised to the rank of Commanders of the National Order of Valour while Bekila Gisele Valerie was raised to rank of a knight.
