Newly admitted student journalists of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) in the University of Buea, UB have been schooled on the importance of adopting peace journalism models during crisis situations.
This was in a talk delivered to the students on the theme “The place of peace Journalism in crisis situation” by Rosaline Akah Obah, trained peace journalists who doubles as the National Coordinator of the Cameroon Community Media Network, CCMN – a network that drills journalists to become peace journalists and give more voice to community issues.
The seasoned journalist with over 15 years of experience challenged the student journalists on the importance of carefully selecting the words they, pictures they use to convey a message to their audience.
While urging them to practice journalism that seeks to build and not to destroy, Obah, urged the students to endevour to adhere to all key journalism norms and canons of being balance, objectivity, fairness, impartiality among others.
“Peace journalism is people oriented and not ‘gombo’ oriented. Peace journalism is solution oriented and a timely endeavour for journalists to use appropriate words and images that encourages initiatives that offer nonviolent responses to conflict with a special focus on tilting our stories around the vulnerable, minority and the suffering masses who bear the brunt of conflict daily and mostly go underreported," Obah told the over 500 students.
The students hailed the initiative of the Head of Department, Kingsley L. Ngange, for giving them the opportunity to see the importance of adopting peace journalist in crisis situations.
