President Biya has supported the tireless efforts of Bamenda City Mayor, Paul Achobong in fight to kill the phenomenon of ghost town and lockdowns instituted by separatist fighters in Bamenda in particular and North West region as a whole with a special grant.
MINAT at security evaluation meeting in Bamenda
The package was delivered by Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji Monday January 18, 2021. This was at the Governor’s office during a security evaluation meeting with administrative and municipal authorities and heads of security and defence forces. The meeting was on the instructions of the Head of State. It follows recent attacks in the region, notably, that on the convoy of Momo SDO which led to the dead of four soldiers and the Divisional Delegate of Communication and the other near a security post at Matazen in the borders with the West region which also claimed the lives of four security officers and two civilians.
Atanga Nji revealed that the Special Grant from Biya is to assist the City Mayor to purchase more buses to ease the circulation of persons and their property on separatist imposed ghost town days.
Motorbikes had long been banned within the urban periphery by the City Mayor. This followed upsurge in violent attacks from separatist hit-and-run fighters on board motorbikes. Atanga Nji said the City Mayor’s move was applauded by the President who has decided to support it.
After following the region’s security report presented by the Governor, Adophe Lele LAfrique, the MINAT, called on the defence and security forces to remain extremely vigilant, mobilised and focused at all times despite the relative calm that reigns in the region.
"The Head of State has won the battle against secessionist and terrorist. He has also provided centres for them to be disarmed and reintegrated,” Atanga Nji said while acknowledging the existence of “pockets of resistance” from separatists who he said will be “neutralised” in no distant time.
He challenged locals to collaborate with security forces to achieve peace, stating that President Biya has done his best to provide solutions to the problems raised at the start of the crisis.
"The Head of State has done his best to resolve the situation and done more. The population must show gratitude for the things he has done. The persisting ghost towns only destroy the economy and the people making efforts to fight that cannot be over emphasized," Atanga Nji stated.
He challenged parents to play their role in encouraging their kids still in the bushes to drop their arms, join the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) centres and regain normal life before it is late else they will be caught and brought to book for Justice to prevail.
"Every parent, member of family has a connection with those in the bushes, they are brothers and sisters to other persons living normal lives. It is time for them to call on these children to denounce their demonic practices, because this game has been on for too long,” the MINAT boss advised parents.
