Visit to west region: Atanga Nji Urges Chiefs To Work For Dev’t, Shun Petition Writing

By Doh Bertrand Nua
The Minister of Territorial Administration has challenged traditional rulers in the West region to play an active role in the decentralization process by fighting for the development of their area and shun anti-republican attitudes of petitioning the regime.

Paul Atanga Nji made the call Wednesday 20 January 2021 in Bafoussam during a meeting with traditional rulers at the West Governor’s office.
He urged the traditional custodians to be more republican and actively participate in development of the country.
“Effective participation of traditional rulers should not only be in the political domain, but also in sectors of development,” Atanga Nji told the traditional rulers.

The MINAT’s remarks follows recent petitions written by traditional rulers relating to certain issues affecting national life.

He frowned at the memo of the chiefs in relation to the armed conflict in the North West and South West regions, adding that the chiefs would have exploited other avenues of making their concerns known than issuing a document that went viral on the social media.

Worth recalling is the fact that the chiefs in a memo last 19 November 2020 criticized the military response to the Anglophone crisis that has killed thousands, rendered hundreds of thousands displaced and immeasurable property destroyed.

Atanga Nji’s visit to the West comes after he spent two days in the North West on the instructions of the President Paul Biya to evaluate the security situation and find exact cause of some recent attacks recorded in the region.
