Cameroon: Civil Society Proposes Shutdown Of Leisure Joints, Sanction To Bus Agencies To Fight COVID-19

“Observatoire du Development Societal” (ODS), a civil society organisation has urged government to shutdown leisure joints notable night clubs, snack bars, cabarets, bars among others nationwide as part of its mechanism to fight the fast-spreading second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The suggestion was made by Koulou Engoulou Lilian Maurice, General Coordinator of ODS during a press conference at their Yaounde headquarters Friday 5 March 2021.

The media outing aimed at adding their voice to that of government to sound an alarm on the seriousness and gravity of the of the COVID-19 situation in the country and to denounce the generalized relaxation regarding the observation of sanitary rules which has caused a sharp rise in the number of positive cases from 25,736 as at 23 December 2020 to 35,714 as at 25 February 2021.

Koulou Engoulou said his suggestion follows observation made which indicates a blatant violation of all government and World Health Organisation prescribed barrier measures in these leisure joints in the country, thereby making it to serve as a breeding ground for the spread of the virus.

He added that non-respect of these prescribed rules simply undermines all the efforts put in place by government as directed by President Paul Biya to fight and contain the virus.

He equally proposed that three months sanctions be meted on operators of both land, air, sea, train transport agencies found violating the prescribed health rues especially the wearing of facemask, disinfection of the hands and respect of distancing measures.

Harping the situation of other populated joints like markets, and based on its importance for daily survival and for a minimum of economic balance, Koulou Engoulou, urged Mayors to embark on coercive awareness-raising in order to dissuade locals from violating preventive rules.

He challenged all and sundry to heed to President Paul Biya’s advice to ensure individual and collective discipline and respect of all the health rules as the only way out to help government contain the virus for return to normal life in the county.
