Cameroon National Assembly, Senate: Biya Renews Confidence In Frail-looking Cavaye, Niat

Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, 81, and Marcel Niat Njifenji, 86, have been reelected to head the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament. The old-new presidents were elected to head the permanent bureaus of both houses in separate sittings Thursday 18 March 2021.
The election at the Lower House was done in a plenary chaired by the dean of the provisionary bureau, Hon. Laurentin Koa Mengue Epse Mbede Thursday 18bMarch 2021.
Cavaye who ran unopposed got 147 votes from the 162 votes cast as against 15 blank ballots. His reelection clocks him 29 years as Speaker of the National Assembly – he first became Speaker in 1992.

After mounting the rostrum to supervise the election of the other bureau members, Cavaye, used thanked his peers for voting him into the position. He saluted his party hierarchy for investing him into the post and called on all and sundry to respect the barrier measures put in place to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like Cavaye, the First Vice President, Hon. Etong Hilarion was voted unopposed. The election of the five other vice presidents, four questers and twelve secretaries was done acclamation as a consensus list was presented including names of those in the opposition.

Niat Maintained, SDF’s Nkele Emilia Dropped From VP Post
It was same ritual at the Senate where Senate President Marcel Niat who has been been absent from active service for close to a year due to ill health was maintained while Aboubakary Abdoulaye was also re-elected as the first vice President. 
Niat who ran unopposed in the election supervised by the Eldest member of the Senate, Victor Mukete, got 85 out of the 93 votes cast with 8 null ballots. After his election, he expressed gratitude to the Head of State and Chairman of the CPDM party, President Paul Biya and the hierarchy of the party and his peers for the confidence bestowed on him once again. 

He then supervised the election of the Vice Presidents, Questors and Secretaries. The only changed in the bureau was within the SDF where Senator Nkeze Emilia was dropped from the position of one of the vice presidents for Senator Mochggle Vanigansen
