Resurgence of COVID-19 cases: Cameroon Gov’t Blames General Indiscipline, Orders Strict Respect Of Barrier Measures

Government has sounded serious warning on the resurgence of and fast spread of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking during a joint press conference that brought together Public Health Minister Manaouda Malachie and the Delegate General of National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguelle, Communication Minister, Rene Emmanuel Sadi said the country has recorded more cases and deaths due to the non-respect of barrier measures.
“As a matter of fact, as of 25 February 2021, Cameroon officially has recorded: 35,714 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 32,594 recovered, 551 deaths, 2672 active cases, including 228 under treatment in the care units, and 53 compatriots under breathing assistance,” Sadi disclosed in the joint statement he read.

“…these figures indicates that Cameroon has moved from 25,738 positive cases on 23 December, 2020, to 35, 714 confirmed cases of COVID-19, on 25 February 2021, hence an increase of nine thousand nine hundred and seventy-six (9,976) new positive cases in our country within two months and two days. However, as earlier mentioned, by 23 December 2020, Cameroon recorded a total of four thousand four hundred and forty-six (446) deaths, against five hundred and fifty-one (551) deaths, recorded during the last weekly evaluation that is, on 25 February 2021. This means that one hundred and five (105) deaths were recorded in our country during the same period, that is, in the last two months,” the release added.

He said vigilance of each and every Cameroonian remains a necessity and a requirement, if not a collective duty and obligation in fighting the spread of the virus at this stage with observation and strict respect of basic barrier measures like: compulsory and systematic wearing of masks in public places; observance of physical distancing; regular hand washing with clean flowing water and soap or hydroalcoholic gel and observation of physical distancing measures.

“… in the face of the almost generalized indiscipline that can be observed, and which is detrimental to our response strategy, we believe that it is more than urgent and imperative to appeal to the sense of responsibility of our fellow citizens, so that they do not lose sight of the fact that, as anywhere else, the Coronavirus pandemic continues to spread,” he said.
