West Region: Angry Bafang Population Storm ENEO Office, Protest Persistent Blackout

Angry inhabitants of Mbavi village in Bafang, Upper Nkam Division of the West region have protested the persistent power cuts recorded of recent in their locality. The irate locals stormed the office of Energy of Cameroon, ENEO – company charged with electricity supply – Monday 29 March 2021.

The angry protesters carried placards with varied messages, expresses the dissatisfaction to the quality of ENEO services. The protesters said their anger was aggravated by the vexing silence maintained by the company of the situation.

The prolonged power outage is said to have resulted from a collapsed electricity pole along the distribution line. The population is said to have been provoked and pushed to the streets by the silence maintained by ENEO officials despite several complaints received from the population.

“We have had enough of this poor treatment from the authorities, so we came out to make them know we are serious and as humans, we need to be treated fairly,” stated an angry protester.

“…ever since the main distribution pole fell, we went and informed them. They promised to come but since then, nothing has been done about it. Now, we have been left in the dark for more than 25 days,” revealed a protester. The population said they are unable to go about their daily activities because of the one month blackout. Businesses are said to be grounded in the area.

“I have lost so much these past days and I know no one will cover the cost for me. I have lost food stuffs and other commodities…we came to see the authorities of ENEO to tell us when they will sort out the issue of electricity in our village and within what timeframe. We are tired of their silence,” a protester said.

The situation in Bafang is similar to that occurring in other major cities of the country notable Yaounde, Douala, Buea, Bamenda where inhabitants now spend days and long hours without electricity.
