Some former workers of the Douala Shipyard and Industrial Company, Chantier Naval earlier this week stormed the entrance to the Prime Minister’s office, demanding years of accumulated salary arrears.
The protesters carried placards and banners bearing the image of the Presidential couple. The banner carried information which requested the PM to order his Secretary General to liberate their files for payment of their overdue arrears. They prayed the PM to order his SG to liberate the files he is withholding from being processed.
“We are here to make the Prime Minister know that we are tired of waiting and nothing is being done about our documents. We learnt from sources that our documents are being blocked in the office of Seraphin Fouda, Secretary General at the Prime Minister’s office,” explained one of the protesters.
“We are demanding more than FCFA 990 million from the state and this amount represents the payment of our rights related to our dismissal in 2009. The presidency of the Republic had already given its approval for an effective resolution of the problem but till this date and time, nothing has been done to remedy our situation.”
The protest in Yaoundé adds to other demonstrations that have been made the workers some of whom barely struggle to food their bills and that of their family. In August 2020, a crowd of closed to 500 of the former workers in one of their protest in Douala threatened to storm Yaounde if nothing was done.
They shockingly revealed that about 30 of their colleagues have succumbed to the cold hands of death in precarious conditions due to the hard times that couldn’t enable them food their hospital bills.
