Recruitment of 2000 PhD holders: Another Batch Of Over 500 Recruited Into State Universities

The perennial problem of inadequate lecturers in all state universities nationwide is gradually being addressed by government with the recruitment of another batch of over 500 PhD holders.
The move for special recruitment of 2000 PhD holders into state universities within a period of three years was announced by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya during his traditional Youth Day address to youths 10 February 2019. The recruitment was schedule to involve 1000 in 2019, 500 in 2020 and 500 in 2021.

It is in line with the schedule that over 500 have been recruited into state universities nationwide for the 2020/2021 academic year. It is the second phase of the special recruitment. The newly recruited are expected to further improve on the staffing situation of these higher institutions of learning.

The first phase launched in 2020 saw recruitment of 1235 lecturers nationwide for the 2019/2020 academic year. About 300 are expected to be recruited next year to complete the 2000 places made available by the Presidential decision.

It is still not clear if the second phase will pose serious problems from those whose files were rejected as was the case during the first phase. Government finally bowed to pressure from the protesting PhD holders and ordered their special recruitment into state universities.

The disgruntled PhD holders who spent three weeks sleeping in front of the ministry complained about duplicates of some names on the recruitment list, recruitment of Master Degree holders, submission delays for applicants from the diaspora, recruitment of applicants with fake certificates, recruitment of secondary school PhD holders for a recruitment intended for unemployed PhD holders, an increase in the age limit to 45 years among others.

The truce was reached between them and the Minister following an order by the Head of State. To resolve the problem, Fame Ndongo authorised the different University Rectors/Vice Chancellors to replace where necessary deceased lecturers, resigned, abandoned their duty posts or have been dismissed with PhD holders older than 45 years provided they meet the conditions required.
