2021 AFCON: CAF SG Allays Fears, Maintain Cameroon As Host Despite Rumours

The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has maintained that the 2021 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be played in Cameron. Veron Mosengo-Omba was speaking 15 June 2021 during an evaluation visit and discussions with the members of the Local Organising Committee (COCAN) led by its President, Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi of Sports and Physical Education.
“We will play AFCON in this country in January,” the CAF scribe declared. The statement has come to allay fears that the hosting rights of the competition will be withdrawn from Cameroon for the second time over delays in the completion of infrastructure.

Mosengo-Omba expressed satisfaction with the state of infrastructure in the country and thanked the Head of State, President Paul Biya for the facilities which will not only be beneficial to the Cameroonian population but to Africa at large.

The SG hinted that the postponed draw ceremony will take place in the month of August. He urged Cameroonians to stick to information from CAF authorities and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and not the social media as far as the AFCON tourney is concern.
The delegation equally used the visit to tour the see for themselves the state of works at the Olembe Sports Complex as well as inaugurate the new CAF office in Yaounde where preparations are supposed to be held. The office situated in the COCAN building was opened by the CAF’s scribe and Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi in the presence of FECAFOOT’s interim President, Seidou Mbombo Njoya.
