Regional governors have been instructed to step up security intelligence and vigilance, strictly follow-up and ensure concrete implementation of decentralization as well as track down all run-away contractors stalling development with abandoned projects.
Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji gave the instructions while opening the first bi-annual conference of regional governors in Yaoundé Monday 14 June 2021. The conference at the Yaounde City Council held for the first time since election and installation of the pioneer regional executives.
Holding under the theme “Decentralization and Public Order”, the conference hinged on reviewing the security, political and socio-economic life of the nation which Atanga Nji said was generally under control as well as take measures to handle concerns including persistent acts of banditry, cybercrime, armed robbery, pickpocketing on motorbikes, kidnapping for ransom, urban disorder, the conflict in the two Anglophone regions, the Far North and East regions among others.
Atanga Nji decried the issue of urban disorder common in almost all cities and instructed the governors to ensure their collaborators and municipal authorities follow-up waste disposal by households and ensure the cleanliness of cities are put in their agendas.
He urged the governors to be more present and active on the field, in order to supervise the proper execution of projects with regard to the 2022 African Cup of Nations, other public contracts and report cases of abandoned public investments projects without justification to competent authorities.
Though hailing the administrative authorities for strides in maintaining peace and order throughout the entire electoral process since 2018, Atanga Nji said there still exist persistent acts of banditry that warrants vigilance and intelligence to be step up in all the regions.
He saluted the determination, patriotic commitment and professionalism of the defense and security forces for the encouraging results obtained in the trouble North West, South West, Far North and East Regions but stated that proactive moves and predictive intelligence should remain a priority in maintaining public order as well as protecting persons and their property.
The MINAT urged the governors to aside ensuring concretely implementation of decentralization, supervise the functioning of all public services in the interest of all, without favouritism but with firmness and to ensure local elected officials work in harmony and synergy in the interest of the people. This, he said will enable the population to better understand decentralization and the benefits brings to their living conditions through proximity development.
He called on the governors to take measures to ensure hitch-free end-of-year examinations, intensify sensitization campaigns for the vaccination and to ensure strictly and continuous respect of barrier measures.
He appreciated the motorbike associations of Douala, Garoua, Maroua and Bamenda for accompanying government in maintaining order by identifying all riders in the sector and urged other regions to follow in same direction.
The meeting featured reports from the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguelle and the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defense in Charge of the National Gendarmerie.
