Officials of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) have promised that the upcoming regional polls billed for 6 December 2020 nationwide. will be transparent, credible and void of hitches.
ELECAM Board Chairman, Enoh Abraws Egbe gave the assurance Wednesday 25 November 2020 in Yaounde. He was speaking while chairing the 5th session as of right of the Electoral Board in prelude to the polls.
It was devoted to review and fine-tune final adjustments regarding the preparations on the one hand and to agree on the terms of reference for the next field trip of the organ as well as establish and adopt in accordance with provisions of Section 263 (2) of the Electoral Code, the composition of Regional Supervisory Commissions.
Enoh Abrams said the planned field trips will focus on ensuring the quantitative and qualitative availability of election documents and material in the various constituencies as well as in polling stations on Election Day, pay close attention to last minute details and resolve any difficulties and risks that may arise in the field before, during and even after the elections in strict compliance to the electoral law.
He hailed the foresight and efforts of the Director General of Elections, Dr. Eric Essousse, for ensuring the presence of election documents and material in all constituencies.
He said ELECAM’s objective to increase integrity, inclusion, transparency and credibility of the electoral process in the country remain a constant.
He added that the election would enable government take decisive democratic step towards its fulfilment, in the setting up of decentralized institutions.
While expressing concerns over the security situation of some regions coupled with the current health crisis under which the election is being held, Enoh Abrams, disclosed that government is working tirelessly to provide them with all the necessary support aimed at securing both the electoral operations and the actors involved.
He added that ELECAM personnel have been carefully familiarized with all anti-COVID-19 health protocol in order to ensure strict respect of barrier measures during the polls.
“Under these conditions, I can reassure the candidates and the voters that the adequate measures have already been taken, so that they can move in complete peace of mind to accomplish their fundamental civic duty,” Enoh said, while epresing the organ’s gratitude to authorities directly involved in this election, for their unwavering support.
It order to guard against anything that would jeopardize the credibility of the polls, Enoh disclosed that capacity building workshops to upgrade trainers already initiated will continue in the field for presidents and members of the various local voting and regional supervisory commissions with a view minimize mistakes.
