Outstanding pupils and students drawn from the eleven subdivisions that make up Sanaga-Maritime Division in the Littoral region in both the French and English subsystems of education have been awarded scholarships.
The scholarship funds were handed to the over 630 kids during the second edition of the ‘La Main Tendue’ Foundation scholarship awards founded and promoted by H.E. Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe, Minister of Transport who doubles as a son of the area.
The event unfolded at the esplanade of the Sanaga-Maritime Divisional office in Edea recently and was preceded by an inter-religious prayer service in honour of seven students recently killed in Kumba by gunmen and for the return of peace and normalcy in the troubled regions.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Bibehe said the sole objective of the award is to promote academic excellence, imbibe the spirit of hard work among kids irrespective of their family, class, religious or social background and status and implement President Paul Biya’s living together concept among all in the Division.
He said the scholarship will not only lessen the burden of parents but help prepare the kids to become elite worthy of Sanaga-Maritime in the future.
Bibehe while thanking those supporting the activities of the foundation, challenged all elite of Division to federate forces behind the foundation and make it grow to higher heights for the benefit of kids of the area.
In her speech, the Executive President the foundation, Mrs. Lydienne Mouloby espe Ngalle Bibehe, disclosed that the scholarship programme had two major innovations, that of including outstanding pupils and students from the English subsystem of education and to hand gifts to orphanages as well as some underprivileged kids who needed to be assisted.
She condemned the attack on students in utmost vehemence, called for return to peace, normalcy and for children’s right to education to be taken into consideration by separatist.
She used the event to highlight other activities carried out by the foundation including donation of anti-COVID-19-kits to the community, visits to prisons among others.
Award Statistics
The president of the organisation committee, Nonga Alphonse Bernard, disclosed that the funds handed to the over 630 pupils and students from across the 11 subdivisions included 559 best in official examinations and 86 orphans.
The scholarship funds ranged from FCFA 15 000 to FCFA 20 000 for primary school pupils, FCFA 20 000 to FCFA 30 000 for secondary school students and FCFA 50 000 for high school students.
He added that the foundation also decided to accompany five of the overall best students in the Division throughout their education right up to the job market as well as added them FCFA 100 000 to 200 000 to their scholarship package.
Donation to Orphanages
The foundation as part of their second innovation, handed basic food items comprising bags of rice, spaghetti, vegetable oil, tablets of soap, packets of drugs among others to some six orphanages in the Division.
The elite of the area through the Edea City Mayor lauded the foundation for her humanitarian gesture and prayed for more.
The event that was rich in dance and singing had in attendance MPs and other well to do personalities.
