Garoua, North Region: ELECAM Launches Annual Revision Of Electoral Register

By Doh Bertrand Nua in Yaounde

Officials of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) have launched the annual revision process of the electoral register for the year 2021. The exercise was launched in Garoua earlier this week by the Director General of Elections, Dr. Eric Esousse. This is accordance with the Electoral code which stipulates that the registration of eligible voters runs each year from January to 31 August.

Speaking at the ceremony at the premises of the North Regional Delegation of Post and Telecommunications were the event took place, Essousse, encouraged youth, women and others to register on the electoral list.

“Now that we are in the decentralisation age, each person in the local region have to do their best to improve the capacity of the region. And I feel that the registration is the first step in that capacity,” he said.

He stated that the elections management body counts on civil society organisations and leaders of political parties for the smooth success of the revision exercise.

Essousse blamed low voter registration by the closed of the 2020 electoral register 31 August 2020 on the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that prevented ELECAM personnel from conducting field registrations.

To recall is the fact that a total of 15 077 new voters were registered out of which were 9 989 men, 5 088 women, 38 persons living with disabilities and 10 257 youth in 2020. The statistics increased the total number of registered voters to six million eight hundred and sixty-eight thousand five hundred and seventy-five (6 868 575).

He equally used the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a permanent building to host the North Regional Delegation of ELECAM as well as the Benue Divisional Branch.
