With less than ten months left for the kickoff of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon, the Prime Minister has instructed all actors concern in the preparation chain to federate their forces in order to ensure speedy completion of ongoing works on hotels, stadia and roads infrastructures.
Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute gave the instructions while sharing the 29th session of the committee tasked with preparing the continental soccer jamboree. The session focused on evaluations of the state of sporting and lodging infrastructure as well as the progress of works along some major highways in the country.
The Head of Government told the committee members to draw lessons from the just ended Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in order to make next year’s AFCON a resounding success. Focus during the session was on facilities that weren’t used during the just ended CHAN especially those in the towns of Garoua and Bafoussam.
Committee members examined hotels in the two towns to ensure new FIFA and CAF guidelines are respected especially that of ensuring additional rooms in some of the chosen hotels. Leisure and Tourism Minister used the session to assure the PM that the hotels in the two towns have remain operational even if renovation works are needed in some areas.
“In one or two of those projects, we need to put pressure on enterprises that are charged of executing the projects. Everything will be done because we have to be sure that we will organize the next competition,” said Bello Bouba Maigari.
The coordinator of the operational technical unit Francois Felix Ewane disclosed that works on facilities in Bafoussam and Garoua are ready with finishing touches ongoing in a majority of the training stadiums earmarked.
“We have noticed a second number of shortcomings here and there. The first step is to upgrade infrastructures so that they can correct all the failures discovered…we have to maintain the stadia so that they be in better shape for the competition. A lot has been done, we still a lot to do to raise the infrastructure up to the prestige of this country,” he stated while reacting on the troublesome case of Olembe site.
On the issue of the road works link the East entrance to the Economic Capital, Douala, Public Works Minister, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, said the works have recorded some progress but insisted that its completion will depend on the availability of funds for the project.
