Cameroon Bakassi Peninsula: Gov’t Donates 60 Newly Constructed Houses, Equipment To Cameroonian Fishermen

Cameroonian fishermen in Bakassi peninsula have expressed satisfaction to government following the handing over of sixty newly constructed houses and fishing equipment to the Bakassi Peninsula Development Programme, BADEP.
This was during a ceremony in Jabane as part of efforts to encourage Cameroonian fishermen in a sector largely dominated by Nigerians. The Cameroonian fishermen were equipped with modern fishing materials including outboard engines and sixty low cost houses in Isangele New Beach.
While handing offer the consignment to BADEP, the representative of the of the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industry, Dr. Mimbang, said the move is part of government’s efforts to assist Cameroonian fishermen to increase production in local market.

“The area is very rich in resources. These fishing resources will be exploited sustainably with all the materials that have been handed over today. These products will be send and sold within the level of fishing markets within the country. This will have import substitution whereby fishing products that are produced in our waters should be available for the population,” Mimbang said, adding that the sector is expected to play a key role in the economy’s growth, employment and poverty reduction.

South West Regional Delegate of Livestock, r. Egbe Lucy used the occasion to thank the minister for this wonderful gesture to provide the fishermen with the material which she said will go a long way to help, empower fishermen and make them create wealth for themselves.

The beneficiary population saluted the move from government and pledged to make adequate use of the equipment to boost output in their activities, compete with Nigeria fishermen and ensure availability of fish in the local markets.
