The Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director of United Nations Human Settlements Programme has said his organisation will help Cameroon implement the new urban development agenda.
He equally pledged to ensure the renovation of the dilapidated structures owned by the Cameroon Real Estate Corporation known in its French acronym as SIC in neighbourhoods like Cité Verte, Nlongkak, and Messa in Yaounde and in Garoua.
The announced renovation package to SIC to amount FCFA 2 billion was made after a visit to the social housing sites owned by SIC during which tenants’ difficulties were assessed.
“We have had the opportunity to share with the PM the various meeting I have had with the ministries as well as with SIC and the site visits we made at some of the buildings put together by SIC. We noticed very dilapidated structures but we are proposing that going forward, there should be a budgetary line to ensure maintenance and upkeep with some of the structures,” he said.
Kisob and the PM also discussed some good practices that are found in our new urban agenda and some of the other elements that belong to the sustainable development goal 11.
“…we have highlighted some of the issues related to solid waste management, solar energy and land tenure…these are some of the things that as we have best practices across the world we can be able to share with our counterparts here in Cameroon,” he revealed, while expressing the wish for government to adhere to the new paradigm to govern urban development worldwide.
In another audience with External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella, it was disclosed that President Paul Biya has authorised the establishment of the agreement for the UN Habitat Head office in Cameroon.
Kisob’s visit to Cameroon comes after the organisation put in place a new urban agenda which lays out standards for the planning and development of urban areas to promote a healthy urbanisation worldwide.
